Speckled Wood

Speckled Wood can often be found basking in sunny spots on the gravel track through Alderhill Inclosure.   Emerging from mid-April, it is often the first species seen which hasn't over-wintered as a sheltering adult.  Successive generations through the summer mean that it can be found throughout the monitoring season, and its willingness to fly in cool, cloudy weather means that it is consistently found.  Numbers have crashed following the clearance work in Alderhill during the winter of 2018, which damaged their favoured habitat, however they have begun to appear in the thorn scrub near Ogdens.
