Large Skipper

These small, moth-like butterflies emerge in large numbers in late June and July, for a brief season.  They prefer the longer grasses and brambles on the woodland edge or beside scrubby hedge lines.  The population fluctuates between years, with the peak numbers seen in 2018 making it the third most numerous butterfly that year, and following the crash in 2020 and again in 2021 numbers picked up in the hot summer of 2022.
