Grayling

This cryptically camouflaged heathland specialist is one of the most special of Latchmore's butterflies.  It favours sunny, sandy spots surrounded by low heather, so can be found on the open south-facing slopes to the northern side of Latchmore Brook.  It is a sun-loving mid-summer species, not appearing until mid-July, and rarely seen after the end of August.  The New Forest is a national stronghold for this species, which is also found in coastal dunes.  In 2021, a continued hot, dry September contributed to its strongest year so far.
