Small Copper

The diminutive Small Copper seems to like conditions on the grazed heath of Latchmore, and numbers are rising.  There appears to be three broods, one emerging in late April or early May, the second in July or August, and the third in mid-September.  It is one of the very few butterflies still on the wing on sunny days at the end of September.   The lack of Small Copper in 2022 was noted across the New Forest, not just in Latchmore.
