Small Heath

Formerly a very common species, numbers of Small Heath have fallen, so it is good to see that Latchmore maintains a good population.  A tiny butterfly of short grassland, it is easily overlooked.  It may be one of the few species which does better when the grass is grazed heavily.  It appears quite territorial, with the  same small areas of the route consistently holding good numbers, and can be found throughout the summer.
