Purple Hairstreak

This small, elusive species makes its home in the canopy of mature oak trees, with the females laying their eggs in blackthorn scrub.  They are seldom seen on or near the ground, so finding one under a large oak beside the green ride between the inclosures on a hot, sunny day in July 2021 was a real bonus.  It rested briefly, wings closed, before returning to the highest branches of the oak.  This became the 31st species seen on the route, discovered in the seventh year of monitoring.
